If you have been having anxiety thinking about the possibility that warrant may be out for your arrest but you aren’t totally sure, then let us help you alleviate those fears! Here are some steps to help you not only figure out if there actually is a warrant out for you and if so what can be done about it.
Figure out if there actually is a warrant
The very first step is to see if there even is a standing warrant out under your name and then to investigate to find out what the warrant is actually for. Warrants, for the most part, are usually issued for one of two reasons. One is the person being charged did a no show for a scheduled court hearing. If this happens, a judge will usually issue a bench warrant for that person’s arrest. The other reason is if a person is suspected of a crime and there is enough evidence where a judge would be willing to sign a warrant after there has been some type of investigation showing possible probably cause. When a warrant is issued, it does not, however, mean that the police will arrest the suspect right away. In fact, sometimes it could happen months later which is most likely why many are unaware they have a warrant out for their arrest in the first place. If you suspect you might have a warrant out, you can call your local bail bondsman and they will be able to search to see if you in fact do have one.
Steps to take if there is a warrant
If after you contacted a bail bondsman to do a search you find that you do in fact have a warrant out under your name, the next step is to get in touch with a lawyer to see how to best handle the situation. They may help you to negotiate for you to turn yourself in and to also work with a bail bondsman to see if a pre-arranged bail may be possible so that if you have to turn yourself in, you can avoid having to spend any actual time in jail. When you do this, you are not only showing the courts that you are taking this seriously and being responsible but since you are being proactive, it also gives you more control over the situation as a whole.
